How to Tell Your Parents You're Pregnant: 10 Ideas (Even From Far Away)

Telling your parents they're going to be grandparents is one of the few announcements you only get to make once (per baby). It's worth a little planning. Here are ten ideas, from quiet and simple to something they'll show their friends, plus what to do when they live hours or oceans away.
In person
1. A "Promoted to Grandma / Grandpa" mug. Give them a new mug over coffee and wait for them to read it. Fill it with their usual drink so they have to look inside.
2. A photo frame with the scan. Wrap a frame with the ultrasound inside and a label: "Your first grandchild, arriving [month]."
3. A family photo with a twist. Ask everyone to say "Mom's going to be a grandma!" instead of "cheese" when the timer goes, and film the moment it lands.
4. A book for the grandchild. Give them a children's book with a note inside the cover: "Can't wait for you to read this to the baby."
5. Dinner with a new place setting. Add a tiny bib or baby spoon at the table and see who notices first.
When they live far away
Distance doesn't have to mean a phone call that starts with "So... we have news." These ideas keep the surprise on their side.
6. A digital scratch card. Send a link to a scratch card that reveals "You're going to be a Grandma!" with your scan photo and message. Our Promoted to Grandma and Promoted to Grandpa cards are made for exactly this, and you can write the message in their language. Ask them to open it while you're on a video call so you see their face.
7. A parcel with "open on video" on it. Post a small box (baby socks, the scan, a card) and ask them to open it with you on a call.
8. A puzzle that spells it out. Send a jigsaw printed with the news. They only find out once it's finished, which builds a nice bit of suspense.
9. A voice note from "the baby". Record a short message in a soft voice: "Hi Grandma, I'm arriving in May." Simple, a little silly, and they'll play it again and again.
10. A video call quiz. Ask a few easy family questions, then end with "Who's going to be a grandparent in [month]?"
Wording ideas
- "We have a new job for you: Grandma. Start date: [month]."
- "Guess who's getting promoted? You are. Grandpa, [year]."
- "You were wonderful parents. Get ready to be even better grandparents."
- "Your lap is about to get very busy. Baby arrives in [month]."
- "Coming soon: someone who'll love you as much as we do."
A few tips
- Tell both sets of parents close together so nobody hears it second-hand.
- Plan the order. If siblings or close friends might post about it, tell parents first.
- Have a phone ready. Most people regret not filming the reaction. If they're far away, a video call while they open a card or parcel gets you the moment too.
- Have answers ready. Due date, how you're feeling, whether you know the gender: parents will ask straight away.
Whatever you choose, it will be the news they remember. For a reveal they can open on their own phone, have a look at our pregnancy announcement scratch cards.
