The Story Behind NylaLand

I've always loved physical scratch cards. There's something about that ritual — the coin, the anticipation, not knowing what's underneath — that never gets old. It's simple, it's tactile, and for a few seconds it has your complete attention.

I wanted that same experience digitally — instant, personal, with unique designs that felt like me. I was between jobs at the time and was learning a new programming language. So I started building — not because I had a business plan, but because the idea was too fun not to try.

I started building the iScratch engine — the technology that powers the animated scratch reveals on every card — and over time it grew into something I was genuinely proud of. Background music that plays as you scratch. Animated video backgrounds that make the moment come alive. Photo cards where you can drop in a personal photo behind the scratch layer. The kind of thing that makes someone go oh when they open it.

The Moment It Became Something More

When I had my first card working — music, animation, the whole thing — I showed it to my young daughter. Just to see what she thought.

She was absolutely thrilled. Curious, delighted, scratching away at the screen with this huge grin. She wanted to do it again. And again.

That reaction told me everything. If a child lights up like that, you're onto something. That's when a fun project started feeling like something worth sharing with the world.

What NylaLand Is

NylaLand is a small, independent shop. It's just me running everything: designing the cards, writing the code, handling support, and writing posts like this one — with a lot of support from my family.

I'm based in Ontario, Canada. I started selling on Etsy first, which was wonderful for getting early feedback from customers who told me honestly what they loved and what they wanted more of.

The store you're reading this on — nylaland.com — launched in April 2026. Building it from scratch (no pun intended) was its own project — all the plumbing that has to work perfectly before a customer even sees a product page. I'm proud of how it turned out.

Why "NylaLand"?

Nyla is my daughter. She's the reason I wanted the cards to feel joyful — genuinely, unambiguously joyful — rather than just functional. Watching her react wide eyed, smiling, jiggling to the music with complete, unfiltered delight was a reminder of what a good surprise should feel like.

NylaLand is a place where that feeling lives and her reaction is baked into everything we make. If it doesn't feel genuinely delightful, it doesn't ship.

What's Coming on This Blog

This is the first post, so it felt right to start with the story. But going forward, this blog will be a mix of things:

  • New card releases — when we add new themes, you'll hear about them here first
  • How to use the cards — tips for making your message land, timing the send, adding a personal touch
  • Occasions we love — birthday, sure, but also the occasions that don't get enough credit (the "just because", the "I saw this and thought of you", the "you got through a hard week")
  • Behind the scenes — how we build things, what's coming, the occasional honest update from a one-person shop
If that sounds like your kind of thing, you can browse the full shop or — if you'd like to try before you buy — we have a free scratch card you can send right now, no purchase needed.

Thank you for being here. It means more than I can say!
